Big Ed’s Army, Navy, and Police Supply was a landmark in Hartville. Partly because of the old WWII tank parked in front and the Korean War fighter plane on the roof but mostly because of Big Ed’s TV ads. In college, Kate’s teachers would have torn Ed’s marketing to shreds, but there was no denying it worked. The ads were as showy as Big Ed, but his message was simple: he sold protection for you and your family.

And that was exactly what she needed.

As she strolled through the front door, lights flashed in her face like paparazzi cameras and a recording of Big Ed boomed over a speaker. “Welcome to Big Ed’s. Here, you’re a star!”

“Welcome to Big Ed’s.” A far less enthusiastic clerk waved from behind a gun case. “Looking for anything in particular?”

“Just browsing,” Kate said and headed down the closest aisle. She wasn’t looking for a gun. She didn’t have a problem owning one, but since Scott had one and wasn’t as careful as he should be with it, she may have to use that in the custody fight and she didn’t want to appear a hypocrite.

She rounded the corner and bumped into the back of a man built like a brick wall. Kate’s glasses slid sideways on her face. She would have fallen over if the man hadn’t grabbed her arm.

“I’m sorry,” she said, straightening her glasses, and looked up—into Ryan’s warm chocolate eyes. “Oh, hello.”

“Hey. Wow. I didn’t think I’d run into you here.”

Kate’s nose wrinkled. “I kinda did the running into you.”

Ryan laughed and let go of her arm. In his other hand he was holding a bright-pink package of pepper spray.

“Red might go better with your blue suit,” Kate said. “But pink works.”

Ryan’s mouth dropped open, then he chuckled. “It’s not for me.” The color rose in his cheeks as he rubbed the back of his strong neck. “I was actually thinking about you—your case, and I, uh, thought that you might need…” He held the package out toward her. “It’s a good choice for personal self-defense.” He moved beside her and pointed at the different pieces contained in the package. “The pepper spray is attached to a keychain with an emergency whistle. The whistle emits three distinct sounds at a hundred and twenty decibels each. It has a locking clip, so all you have to do is pull for the alarm to go off. And the pepper spray is police grade.”

Kate nodded. She’d heard some of what he said, but she was still back at the part where he said that he was thinking about her. “Me? Did you really come here for me?”

“I needed to pick up a couple things for work too.”

She raised a puzzled eyebrow until she realized she must have spoken her thought out loud. Now it was her turn to blush. “It’s perfect!” Her voice was far too high and loud. “Great.” She winced as she’d lowered the pitch too much. She cleared her throat. “Do you have any recommendations for home security?”

“I’m glad you brought that up.
